Holiday baking means fruitcake and cookies. One special kind of cookie becomes a construction material. You're correct if you're thinking of gingerbread. This spicy cookie is the foundation for gingerbread houses. And this year is the fourth annual contest sponsored by the Friends of the Hunterdon County Library and the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce at the County Library on Route 12.
There are two categories: a Hunterdon County scene, or one from a story.
Families, adult, and children each have their own division.
This year, there are 21 gingerbread houses on display
in the gallery and the display area near the circulation desk.
Gingerbread houses, the classic type of design. Simple architecture, embellished with M&Ms, Lifesavers, other candies, gummy bears, licorice, mini-marshmallows, pretzels , Necco wafers for roofing, Ritz crackers, shredded coconut, and more.
This, the fourth annual contest, has seen a wonderful increase
in the number of entries, and their complexity.
There's judging, and prizes too, for best in show and first place in each category.
Best in show was awarded to the Kerchner family's "Nightmare Before Christmas."
"Peterson's Tree Farm" won first place in the adult category.
The Dasch family's entry "Hunterdon County's Wizard of Claus" with the theme "there's no place like home" won first place in the family division.
The gingerbread houses will be on display through December.
